I left my country when I was nineteen
1925
And drifted to a town on the Cuban coast
Met a woman who became my life

And oh when I saw her
The darkness fled from me
And flew like a blackbird into the sun
On the day she married me

Dear God...

But now the drumbirds come for me
Oh now the drumbirds come for me
Lord give me forgiveness
For all that I have done
Forgive me now of the weight I bear
Don't keep me on the run

Dear God
Dear God
I remember climbing up those shoulders
And coming up under you like a lion
And coming down like we were dying
Dear God

I left my country when I was nineteen
1925
And drifted to a town on the Cuban coast
Met a woman who became my life

And oh when I saw her
The darkness fled from me
And flew like a blackbird into the sun
On the day she married me

Dear God
Dear God
I remember climbing up those shoulders...

In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay
(2x)

Yeah, people listen attentively
I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet

This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
And baked into cakes which are passed around

In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay

Beauty, talent, fame, money, refinement, job skill and brain
And all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side

In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay

The D and the A and the M and the N and the A
And the T and the I-O-N
Lose your face
Lose your name
And get fitted for a suit of flames
(2x)

. . .

Can't get the stink off
He's been hanging 'round for days
Comes like a comet
Suckered you but not your friends
One day he'll get to you
And teach you how to be a holy cow

You do it to yourself, you do
and that's what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
you and no-one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself

Don't get my sympathy
Hanging out the 15th floor
Changed the locks three times
He still comes reeling through the door
One day I'll get to you
And teach you how to get to purest Hell

You do it to yourself, you do
and that's what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
you and no-one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself

You do it to yourself, you do
and that's what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
you and no-one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself, yourself, yourself.

Come let us make bricks
and burn them hard
We'll build a city with a tower for the world
and climb so we can reach
anything we may propose
Anything at all

Build me up, tear me down
like a skyscraper
Build me up, then tear down these joining walls
So they can't climb at all
So they can't climb at all

I know why you tore it down that day
You thought, that if you got caught
we all go away
Like a spoiled little baby
who can't come out and play
You had your revenge

Build me up, tear me down
like a skyscraper
Build me up, then tear down these joining walls
So they can't climb at all
So they can't climb at all

Well madness reigned
and paradise drowned
when Babel's walls came on crashing down
Now the echoes roar
for the story lived
that was hardly understood
and never any good

So build me up, tear me down
like a skyscraper
Build me up, then tear down these joining walls
So they can't climb at all
So they can't climb at all

One Saturday I took a walk to Zipperhead
I met a girl there and she almost knocked me dead
Punk rock girl, please look at me
Punk rock girl, what do you see?
Let's travel round the world
Just you and me punk rock girl

I tapped her on the shoulder
And said do you have a beau?
She looked at me and smiled and said she did not know
Punk rock girl, give me a chance
Punk rock girl, let's go slamdance
We'll dress like Minnie Pearl
Just you and me punk rock girl

We went to the Phillie Pizza Company
And ordered some hot tea
The waitress said 'Well no, we only have it iced'
So we jumped up on the table and shouted 'anarchy'
And someone played a Beach Boys song on the jukebox
It was 'California Dreamin
So we started screamin'
'On such a winter's day'

She took me to her parents for a Sunday meal
Her father took one look at me and he began to squeal
Punk rock girl, it makes no sense
Punk rock girl, your dad is the Vice President
Rich as the Duke of Earl
Yeah you're for me punk rock girl

We went to a shopping mall
And laughed at all the shoppers
And security guards trailed us to a record shop
We asked for Mojo Nixon
They said 'He don't work here'
We said 'If you don't got Mojo Nixon
Then your store could use some fixin

We got into a car
Away we started rollin'
I said 'How much you pay for this?'
She said 'Nothing man, it's stolen'
Punk rock girl, you look so wild
Punk rock girl, let's have a child
We'll name her Minnie Pearl
Just you and me, eating fudge banana swirl
Just you and me, we'll travel round the world
Just you and me, punk rock girl

Possesions never meant anything to me
I'm not crazy
Well that's not true, I've got a bed, and a guitar
And a dog named Bob who pisses on my floor
That's right, I've got a floor
So what, so what, so what?
I've got pockets full of kleenex and lint and holes
Where everything important to me
Just seems to fall right down my leg
And on to the floor

My closest friend linoleum
Linoleum

Supports my head, gives me something to believe
That's me on the beachside combing the sand
Metalmeter in my hand
Sportin' a pocket full of change
That's me on the street with a violin under my chin
Playing with a grin, singing gibberish
That's me on the back of the bus
That's me in the cell
That's me inside your head (3x)

That's me on the back of the bus
That's me in the cell
That's me inside your head (2x)

The mama pajama rolled out of bed
And she ran to the police station
When the papa found out he began to shout
And he started the investigation

It's against the law
It was against the law
What the mama saw
It was against the law

The mama looked down and spit on the ground
Every time my name gets mentioned
The papa said 'oi if I get that boy
I’m gonna stick him in the house of detention'

Well I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way
I'm taking my time but I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
See me and Julio down by the schoolyard
See me and Julio down by the schoolyard

In a couple of days they come and take me away
But the press let the story leak
And when the radical priest come to get me released
We was all on the cover of Newsweek

And I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way I'm taking my time
But I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
See me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
See me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard

There is a man with no face and a name I don't remember
Lives in a house in the middle of the woods
And he said once 'son, don't you laugh out loud
For they are listening, oh yes they are listening

Oh, you've got to be strong
Oh, you've got to keep holding on
Now it's just a matter of time'

They provide the paint for the picture perfect masterpiece that you will
Paint on the insides of your eyelids
Can you possibly see anything you want to see?
No, hell no, there's nothing wrong with the way I see

And he wanted to be a soldier in the next great war
He wanted to kill and fight and maim but not be told what he was fighting for
And that's the way it's going to have to be, my friend
And that's the way it's going to have to be, my friend

I passed a man on the corner in the city yesterday
Singing 'Yada yada yada and tomorrow it'll end'
And I never thought I'd live to see another sunny day
But I'm here and I fear I'll be here until the end

So watch your mouth or you're going to make a grave mistake
Hold your tongue or you're going to catch a bullet in the head
Watch your mouth or you're going to make a grave mistake
Don't die for anything less than the best of life

The things they said went to your head
But you never tried to understand
What they take, you will never take back
Cuz they take what they take what they can because they can from you

You follow me and you follow me but you never ask why
And I wonder what you're under could this be another piece of the
I don't know, I just do what they say
Because they say what to do in a matter of fact way

But don't stop because you might get burned
And you might just learn to stand on your own two feet
And I think that it's neat how you learn to repeat
Everything that you hear in the street so well

Learn to repeat everything that you hear so well
You learn to repeat everything that you hear so well

And everyone was resting because they thought it was the end
And even if it wasn't, they decided to pretend
And somewhere in the distance I could hear him whispering
'You can fight all you want, they will win in the end, so'

Sometimes in the evening when I'm lying in my bed
I am taken to the forest to that isolated shed
And I wake with is words resonating in my head
And I can't stop thinking about the gist of what he said

So watch your mouth or you're going to make a grave mistake
Hold your tongue or you're going to catch a bullet in the head
Watch your mouth or you're going to make a grave mistake
Don't die for anything less than the best of,
everyone settles for the rest, not the best of
I will die for no less than the best of life

. . .

I should have known you'd bid me farewell
There's a lesson to be learned from this and I learned it very well
Now, I know you're not the only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again, it's all the same to me

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball
(2x)

You never care for secrets I confide
For you I'm just an ornament, something for your pride
Always running, never caring, that's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time were all you had to give

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball
(2x)

The story's in the past with nothin' to recall
I've got my life to live and I don't need you at all
The rollercoaster ride we took is nearly at an end
I bought my ticket with my tears and that's all I'm gonna spend

And I think it's gonna be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball
Yeah, the morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball
Oh, morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball

This is a morbid story about a fella that had to die,
he had a beautiful wife but he also had a roving eye.

She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
for all the unfaithful husbands to see.

Come let me tell you the story,
of little Willie the Troubador
And just how it happened to pass my friends,
little Willie won't see no more.

You know why?
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
for all the unfaithful husbands to see.

Willie was handsome as he could be,
he met a girl in society
Thin Willie was cursed with a rovin' eye,
and never let a pretty chick pass by.

So he bought himself a convertible bird,
to ride the fine chicks around
He found out he was being followed,
so he could never let the top down.

You know what happened to him?
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
for all the unfaithful husbands to see.

If he drove a girl to a drive-in,
he'd have to go after dark
He knew he'd always have to hide,
so he'd wind up sitting in the park.

She caught him down by the water,
lovin' the fisherman's daughter
she pulled a little pistol from right out of the air,
and shot poor Willie right then and there.

She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
She planted him by the roadside,
for all the unfaithful husbands to see.

I am thinking it's a sign
that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images
and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate
that God himself did make us into corresponding shapes
like puzzle pieces from the clay

True, it may seem like a stretch,
but its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you're away and I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road
for several weeks of shows and when you scan
The radio, I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, 'come down now', they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now', but we'll stay...

I tried my best
to leave this all on your machine
but the persistent beat it sounded thin upon listening
That frankly will not fly
you will hear the shrillest highs and lowest lows
with the windows down when this is guiding you home

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, 'come down now', they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now', but we'll stay...
(2x)
